Extreme Weather – Hurricane Season Is On Its Way!
June 1st marks the first day of hurricane season in Florida and whether or not we have had a large storm in the past few years, you need to be prepared. It is important that you keep in mind that extreme weather can happen at any time and if you are not prepared you are likely going to be caught between a rock and a hard place. Here at Suncoast Electric and Air, we want to make sure that no matter what happens you and your family are safe and protected. In this page, we are going to be going over some important plans so that when extreme weather strikes you will not have to worry about anything but riding out the storm.
Extreme Weather Preparation Tips
Florida Power and Light (better known as FPL) has set out an excellent list of ways to prepare for extreme weather, and we are going to be adding some additional helpful tips. We will also be asking some questions you should be asking yourself!
- Do you have an emergency plan for extreme weather?
If the answer is no, then we highly recommend that you stop what you are doing, gather up your family and decide on one. Do you have a plan if weather hits and you are not at home? What should your children do if they are at a friends house? etc. It is crucial that you set up a meeting place that is simple to remember and perhaps out of the way of other people and also make sure it is someplace that will be easily accessed even after a tornado. - Do you have food and water for up to two weeks?
If you lose power, did you know that you may not have full power back for up to two weeks? While you may be able to use a generator to help you get through the darker times of extreme weather you want to make sure that you have non-perishable foods to make sure that you are taken care of until your lights are back on. - Is your home at risk of damage from your the yard waste?
If you have large trees of other yard waste that could fly up and hit your home in high winds we recommend that you have them removed as soon as possible. At this time of year when extreme weather is likely, it is important that you keep your yard spotless and free of hazards which should be removed completely to prevent additional damage. - Do you have an electrician on hand?
If you are already experiencing electrical issues, it is important that you have them fixed before extreme weather arises. If you have an older electrical panel in need of replacing or other weak points in your homes electrical system you could be at a serious risk of fire. If you do not already have an electrician who looks after your home we recommend that you contact one immediately.
